Hope your birthday was enjoyable. We had a sunday funday including a bike ride and BBQ.
Our trip out west was a smashing good time. We started in Iowa City and played to no one in particular. The band we were on the bill with insisted that they go first because they had a long ride ahead of them after the show. Of course, we were going to Fort Collins and they were going to western Indiana, so we were slightly confused by this. They proceeded to stick around throughout our whole set, and when we were leaving, they continued to get hammered at the bar. Kind of a noodle scratcher.
First CO show was in Loveland. For some reason, a very odd guy decided to open up about his life story to me (not unusual, people do this a lot) including the fact that he was awake for the last 36 hours because of a meth binge. I kept a close eye on the tip jar after that. Other than that, everyone was really cool and we had a lot of fun. We stayed with a guy from Madison who was good friends with Erica from West. I had no idea about that going in, since Jamie set up our sleeping arrangements for this part of the tour. After the show we went back to his house and watched a reply of the Super Bowl. The Packers won again!
Next stop was Keystone. We played 2 very fun shows at a place called the Snake River Saloon. On the walls, they had collages from years gone by made out of old Polaroid pictures. We were looking at the one from 1978 and saw three guys on there that looked exactly like us. We took pictures of the pictures and I’ll show them to you some time. Very eerie. Also, I befriended a giant Pyrenes dog with a giant head named Luka. After our set, she went up on stage and took a nap right by all of my gear. This thing’s head was like a cow head. Huge.
Denver was fun/weird. Saw some old friends, Beth stopped by the venue and bought us a round, and we played our show. We opened for a band called LandSquid. Very strange euro-dance music played by a very hairy shirtless drummer and a German wannabe named Peracles. We was a very convincing false-Deutscher and even convinced our actual German friend Felix.
Jackson started out horrible and finished miraculously. We started playing our gig, which was at a place right on the Town Square, and basically cleared the place out in about 20 minutes. Total exodus. Very frustrating. After our set break, the place started filling up. We played “Night Moves” by Bob Seger and a riot of joy very nearly erupted. After that, we could do no wrong, which was a much needed relief.
Casper. Megean and Derek got some of their friends to have a BBQ for us, which was very generous and very fun. I ate 2 brats and a cheeseburger. And 4 stuffed mushrooms. So good. The show at the Wonder Bar was incredibly fun. Our opening act, Luke Zapf, was an incredible songwriter and very entertaining. One guy was heckling when there was any break in the action, and he I were going back and forth. People were laughing, and we all had a litttle fun with it. We also sold out all of our CDs that night, not something I had expected.
I’m very excited to hit the road again, even if it’s rails not roads. I’ve never taken the train and am very intrigued by the idea. I’ll talk to you soon!
Enjoy the upcoming spring!
